From childhood fascination to a lifetime career.
I feel fortunate that my childhood interest in wildlife and gardening has taken me to agricultural college, and then on to a varied career. From maintaining and landscaping gardens, attending to estates, to working in the grounds of a prestigious hotel. Not to forget the regular appointments from clients to keep their gardens and lawns tidy! I get a buzz helping out family and friends with ideas and suggestions for their gardens and answering plenty of their questions! They suggested that other people might like to get some of the same help so I've decided to give this a go. I'm going to do some regular "blogs" - I'm still not sure what they are - and will be taking on your questions and answering them as best as I can.
I have gained my experience through 13 years working for myself, attending to the grounds of a conference centre (including looking after a protected orchard), and 11 years working in a plant nursery maintaining different varieties of trees and shrubs. Finally, and possibly my favourite place to have worked because of the job in hand and the surroundings: St Georges Park in Burton Upon Trent, where I instigated the replanting of the grounds.
(I've been told to find some pictures, which I admit I haven't always been the best at taking and keeping - but when I find some I'll share them here.)
